Schools and Colleges for Exercise Science

The opportunities for sport and exercise scientists should be plenty as the population ages and becomes more health conscious. Along with the increasing concern over obesity in the United States the need for fitness workers is expected to increase 29 percent between 2008 and 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median annual wage of fitness workers is $29,210, while the average annual income of "therapists" was $51,980 in 2010. Therapists can include occupational, physical and physiology therapists. Considering all these factors, now is a great time to pursue a degree in sport and exercise science. The question is what colleges and universities have sport and exercise science programs and which programs are considered to be the best? We will talk about what makes a good program and what schools are considered to have the top programs.

The sport and exercise science field is a very broad field of study; giving students a variety of specialties to select from. So you need to consider the area you may want to specialize in as different schools excel in different areas. Some of these areas include kinesiology, athletic training, exercise physiology, strength and conditioning specialist, coaching, recreation, occupational and physical therapy.

Top Colleges Offering Sports Science Degrees

One example is the Rutgers Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies. They offer undergraduate students a Bachelor of Science degree in four distinct programs. The first three programs are health-science related and include, Applied Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology and Exercise Science. The fourth program is the business related program of Sport Management.

Texas Tech University and Lubbock Christian University are affiliated and offer a fast track masters degree program in athletic training. Students have the opportunity to complete a bachelor's and a master's degree in five years.
